What exactly is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is an inflammatory disease caused by a tick bite. Researchers have found that other bugs, like mosquitos, spiders, fleas, and mites can transfer the disease as well. Additional theories of transmission include blood, feces, sex, raw food, through the placenta and through breast milk. Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in the U.S.

Lyme disease can cause over 300 symptoms and can affect multiple body systems. Dr. Richard Horowitz describes Lyme as a Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease, or MSIDS. Lyme disease is often referred to as “The Great Imitator” because it mimics many illnesses. They include but are not limited to: ALS (Neurological), MS (Neurological), Alzheimers (Neurodegenerative), Parkinson’s (Neurodegenerative), Arthritis (Rheumatologic), Lupus (Autoimmune), Depression (Psychiatric), and Anxiety (Psychiatric). Lyme can affect all organs, joints, the blood, and the brain.

The Erythema Migrans (EM rash, or “Bullseye” rash) is a tell tale sign of a tick bite. Unfortunately, not every body reacts in this way. Thus prolonging diagnosis and treatment. Only about half of patients develop the classical “Bullseye”/EM rash, and less than half can even recall a tick bite. Each year, thousands go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. During that time, the untreated bacteria spreads throughout the body.

Untreated, or inadequately treated, Lyme disease can cause persistent and long term illness. When a patient continues to experience symptoms after treatment, it is often called Post Treatment Lyme disease Syndrome (PTLDS).

Due to inaccurate testing and underreporting, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) can only estimate the number of cases in the U.S. Approximately 325,000 new cases each year, which is over 800 cases per day! The U.S., however, is not the only country dealing with this disease. Lyme is a global epidemic and can be found on every continent except Antarctica.

Shira Bio

My name is Shira, and I was diagnosed with Chronic Late Stage Lyme Disease at the beginning of 2017. Before the diagnosis, I started researching Lyme Disease to see if it could be the source of all my health problems. I can remember symptoms as far back as 5 years old, which is about the time I believe I was first infected. As I got older new symptoms appeared from nowhere and baffled doctors. The symptoms never seemed to be linked and they often came and went at random.

What has shocked me the most in my extensive research journey is how little is known by medical professionals and the public about Lyme. I would like to fix that!

What I’m hoping to accomplish with this blog is to inform the general public, government officials, and those in the healthcare industry of the severity of this disease.

Once those in power realize how little we know about Lyme, I hope they will understand the importance of research, as well as funding. Please help me spread the word!
